Rants and Raves

eh ... nothing really chapping my hide at the moment, tv-wise

Prime-time shows I recommend

Battlestar Galactica (SciFi) Wow ... who'd'a thunk it? Made me give up my one-woman boycott of the SciFi channel.

Scrubs (NBC) Consistently makes me laugh so hard I can't breathe.  And the sexiest sex scene I've ever seen on TV? (Not just on a sitcom, but AT ALL) -- JD and Elliot, over the couch and onto the floor.  Bam!
Arrested Development (FOX) Unbelievably funny -- don't miss it.  Also on Fox, so...  probably won't last long.

Joan of Arcadia (CBS) Highly recommended.  Very cool show.

The Sopranos (HBO) We don't actually subscribe to HBO, so I've only seen the first 3.5 seasons (on DVD).  This show ROCKS!!!  Well, the episodes written by Michael Imperioli, not so much.

The Amazing Race (CBS) I know, I know ... reality TV.  But it's really pretty cool!  For the full experience, see it and then read the recaps on TWOP.

Other shows I recommend

The Daily Show (Comedy Central) When Craig Kilborn hosted, I thought I knew what love was. But then came Jon Stewart, and I realized that my feelings for Craig were nothing more than a tepid crush.  Yay Jon Stewart!
General Hospital (ABC) The grand matron of soaps.  I've been "watching" this one (at least through Internet updates) since 1994.  At worst, it's trashy, dirty-fighting fun, and at best, it's gripping stories, well acted by good looking people who are comfy with their characters.  Also look here.

Poirot (A&E, PBS) David Suchet IS Hercule Poirot! One of the very few dramatic adaptations that equals the original material in quality. Hugh Fraser is SO COOL! ("Oh, I say...") and Philip Jackson makes Japp even better on the show than in the books. The settings, costumes, and camerawork are WONDERFUL -- especially the beautifully framed shots of the Deco architecture.  No longer a "show" per se, but occasionally a new episode is released.

Shows I rilly, rilly miss And obviously, I recommend these if you happen to run across them in syndication or on tape.

Chef! This BBC show made me spew ginger ale through my nose.  Ouch!  It showed for a while on PBS - Boston; if you ever run across it, DON'T MISS IT! Such a 10.
The Thin Blue Line Another BBC show aired for a while on PBS.  Rowan Atkinson in a speaking role! (Yes, I know it wasn't his only one.)  Go Mr. Bean! Very funny, but not all that well filmed, so a solid 9.
Fawlty Towers A classic. John Cleese, Connie Booth ... the funniest hotel ever.
Goodnight Sweetheart Yet another BBC show aired for a while on PBS. Interesting concept, likeable characters.

One Foot in the Grave And another BBC show aired for a while on PBS. Morbid and "achingly funny", to steal a line describing Titus from FOX's stupid Netscape-crashing website.

M*A*S*HAnother classic. I prefer the BJ/Winchester/Potter episodes to the Trapper/Burns/Blake episodes, but tend not to like the Alan Alda-written episodes so much.
All in the Family Also a classic. "Edith, get me a bee-eh!" Ah, Archie! Ah, Meathead! Ah, Edith! It was nice.

Night Court Almost a classic -- Harry, Dan, and Bull made a grand combo.
Cheers  Almost always watch this when I run across it in syndication -- still a riot!
Mad About You I so know them.  By the end, an 8.5, but at its peak, a 10. The finale was odd and painful.
Newsradio
Poor Phil.  Poor show.  Had a solid 10 all the way up to when Jon Lovitz joined the cast.  Sorry, Jon, I just don't like you very much.
Titus Made me laugh so hard I couldn't breathe sometimes.  The editing was original and the actors hilarious. I particularly admired the way the show's sad and disturbing elements were enhanced by the comedy.
Andy Richter Controls the Universe So, so funny.  Also, amusing.  (hee!)
Watching Ellie  I really wish that this had gotten more of a chance!  It was weirdly charming and pretty funny to boot.

The Tick  hee hee.  hee!  Ha ha ha HA HA HA!! cough, cough.  The cartoon, not the sitcom.
Kids in the Hall Be still my beating heart. Dave Foley ... yum! Often difficult to distinguish the funny from the pathetic; Titus has picked up on a less subtle version of this.  I wish they were still doing it.
Monty Python Perhaps the pinnacle of human comic achievement.
Twin Peaks I didn't see this the first time around -- I was in high school, and probably had other stuff to do, I dunno. Now, Bravo is rerunning the series in its entirety, and I've been watching from the beginning, and have discovered the magic that is Agent Cooper. Yay Kyle Maclachlan!
Law & Order  Yeah, yeah ... I know it's still on.  I always watch an episode I haven't seen before in syndication, and it's almost always really good, but I almost never watch the current season ... it's just not worth the hour I invest.
Farscape Best. Show. Ever.
Firefly Close second to the best. Show. Ever.
Good vs Evil Smart, funny, hip, with great costumes, music, camera and editing.
Millennium
Creepy stories and great acting from Lance Henrikson and Terry O'Quinn.
VoyagerMove over, Picard.  Janeway rules!
Xena: Warrior Princess Campy, yes, but the chemistry between Xena and Gabrielle is beautiful and Bruce Campbell is hilarious as the King of Thieves.

Hercules: the Legendary Journeys  Kevin Sorbo is SO much fun to watch as the laid-back, heart-of-gold, totally mature, wisecracking Herc.
Port Charles  GH's spinoff started in, oh, 1996? '97? I found it as entertaining and well-done as GH -- it's a shame it didn't last.
