A Sonnet by Way of Apology

I, a tired person, listen.
What does a tired person hear?
The closing of your eyes that glisten
As they brim with silent tears.
I do not mean to cause you heartbreak.
It breaks my heart to cause yours hurt.
But when my back and head and heart ache,
I am too quick to treat like dirt
The ones I love with all my being,
All my heart, my mind, my soul.
My sad eyes cannot see for seeing
The tears of one who makes me whole.

Remember, when I twist the knife,
You are my love, my light, my life.
